Club favourite Jus is over saving our water ways on Morten Island. He has been there since Tuesday and is putting in huge 16hr days to try and help save our beautiful Island. So when you think you haven’t trained hard enough for Mooloolaba think of him slaving away not getting any training in at all. Well done champ, you’re my hero!!!.

Raby Bay Club Championships

Please, please, please, support the club and race this last domestic race of the season. It doubles as the state Club Championships and awards clubs on attendance and results.

Every club member counts and I really think we have a good chance of being the most competitive club in Queensland. But, to do this means we need everyone to race. So don’t put away your race gear till after this event.Last year we had only 3 race for points!!!!! Lets make it 30 plus this year!!!! When entering make sure you put down “DAN ATKINS TRAINING RACING inc”.

Mooloolaba Camp
Wrap UP

We had a great camp with Vision Triathlon club on the weekend. Most athletes I spoke to said it was of huge benefit and they really came away with a greater appreciation of the course they are about to tackle next weekend.

I really believe the combing of the 2 squads made a difference to see what others are doing but also getting to know other athletes on a more non competition level. For me and our squad I would have to give the most aggressive athlete too Toby, well done mate you attacked at every chance. And also to Simone the only crash of the weekend I hope you are mending well and hope it hasn’t put you off riding with others.

Well done to all my crew, you all challenged yourselves. Big thanks to Cath for all the work you put in. Finally, Toby thanks for stealing Dave’s clothes at the coffee shop so Max and I had to walk home with him in his superman suit!!!!

Mooloolaba Camp
Camp Athletes

Well this Friday is the day ...Camp is finally here. All athletes will be required at the hotel prior to the 4pm Beach Aquathlon session. All the athletes names will be at the front counter of the hotel. Give the receptionist your name and they will assign you to your room. Each apartment is 3 bedrooms. One room with a double bed and two rooms with two single beds. Obviously, if you are the married couple or the couple' then you have the double bed. I have only allocated one 'couple' per apartment. The first persons to arrive per apartment will be required to give the receptionist their credit card number. This is a security thing. All rooms are fully paid for.

Athletes will meet in the lobby at 3.45pm to walk to the beach for the start of the first session. This being a beach run (no shoes) and open water swimming (with or without goggles); wear thongs to start and have a towel.

Dinner will be at the Mooloolaba Surf Club - Carvary Menu. We will allocate a meeting time post the session to leave. The sooner we get there though the better as with 32 athletes they will need to fit us in as no bookings are allowed at the surf club.

Saturday will consist of a training cycle in the morning- 50-90km depending your ability, and speed. Dan Atkins, Dan Rogers and Myself will be taking the rides. Remember though athletes it is your responsibility to stay with your pack and talk to them if you start to get dropped. It is a training camp so you are expected to 'train outside your comfort' zone if required. All athletes are to carry a mobile phone and licence or id with them and a small piece of paper with an emergency contact name and phone number on it (please do not put down Dan Atkins or Myself as we want a family or friend member outside of the camp that can handle details if required). Have this all in a small glad bag to protect from sweat or rain. There is a 30 to 50 minute run off the bike.

Saturday will also consist of a beach swim/high intensity session with post stretching and an afternoon endurance run. This run will have a minimum time for the junior athletes and then other times depending on the goals of the athletes/injury and fitness levels. Please have something in mind so you can 'push' yourself to a new limit.

Sunday will be a short fast cycle, run off bike and beach swim in the morning...full triathlon.

Athletes will be exposed to feedback and chat sessions with the coaches to pick their brains about training and racing. Athletes, please remember that there may only be 2 keys per room so make sure if there are different abilities/speeds that you have access to the room at all times (leave key at reception???). Especially on the Sunday you will need to deposit your bike, run over the Mooloolaba run course/or part there of, then change for the swim. We need to go up and down from the hotel room to change gear over to make sure it is safe. I am not leaving things on the beach.

FOOD...the most important part. Each athlete will have dinner at the Mooloolaba surf club, carvary menu as that will include all the staples. Athletes will supply drinks. Each room will have a choice of 2 cereals, bread/toast, butter, spreads-honey/jam, milk (please tell me if you require skim or soy milk) for breakfast, a tub of Gatorade to assist recovery and lunch will be supplied. Athletes will be able to make their own salad rolls (lettuce, carrot, cucumber, cheese, mayo), with tuna or ham. Biscuits/cake etc will also be supplied.

Athletes will need to have all the clothing required for the above training...and maybe a spare set for any surprise sessions; water bottles and drinks/gels/training supplements/food/beach towel. If you have any concerns about the camp details supplied then please contact me prior to Tuesday so there is time to alter. Student athletes will have time to 'study' after the second morning session and endurance run on Saturday as to there will.....WILL be visits to a coffee shop and ice cream /cake outlet and many points...

Pool Complaint!!!!!!
Over the years since I started coaching at Wilston the squad numbers have increased across all levels. This is fantastic, as it is an indication that we are all doing a great job!!! But, with this we have also had complaints from locals with our noise levels. I have tried to address the situation many times but in a local area it keeps coming up.

If we could try to appreciate the locals by keeping our noise levels down that would be great. If you turn up at 5am to swim please remember that even though we are doing a good thing others are still trying to sleep. Please try not to slam your door and also if you are going to wait outside the pool gate please keep your conversation down low. When you are leaving at 8pm also take the locals in consideration.

Another problem at the school, if you are parking please refrain from parking directly in the school zone drop off. If a child is dropped of early to before school care they will need to park in this zone, and always don’t park in the bus stop.

If it means you have to park an extra 100m away please do so, remember we are the athletes!!!! I would hate to think that we could be shut down in any capacity because of this.

New Session!!!!
Starting next Wednesday the 28th from 6pm till 7pm I will trialling a weekly stroke development session for all athletes just looking to work on their technique.

This wont be based around distance, more just to encourage new swimmers or even our regulars. So, let anyone know about the session that you may think will be interested.

Cost is $9 casual or $85 for the 10 sessions. Similar to the Mothers session I used to have, but this will be open to all genders!!!!

Selection Policy & World Championship Update
In no particular order, here is some latest news impacting on those attempting to qualify for next year’s various world championships:

  1. The Sprint Distance selection policy has been amended to reflect that the youngest age category in the World Championship is 16-19 years (not 18-19 years as stated in the original policy).
  2. The entry fee for the 2009 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships is $280 (AUD).
  3. The 2009 ITU Duathlon World Championships will be held in North Carolina, USA, on September 26-27.
  4. Official results and ITU selection points for the Adelaide Challenge will be posted before Christmas. With two home Worlds in 2009, there is an unprecedented amount of queries and several checks required in regard to selection points. The selection committee, working diligently and voluntarily, will aim to publishpoints for each Challenge Series event on the Monday three weeks after it is held.
  5. In the New Year, the Triathlon Australia website will feature a graphic on the home page that will link directly to information on the 2009 ITU World Championships on the Gold Coast. Team management fees for the 2009 ITU World Championships are:
  • Olympic Distance - $625 which includes: $350 event entry fee, $170 athlete levy*, $65 team dinner/`break`fast, $40 athlete pack/event DVD
  • Sprint Distance - $560 which includes: $290 event entry fee, $170 athlete levy*, $65 team dinner/breakfast, $40 athlete pack/event DVD
  • Long Distance - $680 which includes: $280 event entry fee, $295 athlete levy*, $65 team dinner/breakfast, $40 athlete pack/event DVD

* The athlete levy includes costs associated with providing the following services to athletes: bike mechanics, doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists and team management. The reason for a difference between the Gold Coast and Perth athlete levies is due to the per-head cost being higher when providing services for a smaller team. Duathlon team management fees will be advised in due course once interest is ascertained.

Queenslanders - majority of the Youth Olympic Team

The 2XU Super Sprint Race Weekend was held at Runaway Bay, Gold Coast and doubled as a selection event for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival to be held in Sydney 14-18th January 2009. There were six places available in both the Male and Female teams with a reserve being announced in the boys team. The Youth Olympics will be a great event with countries bringing Junior teams from around the world to compete.

It is great to see these junior athletes coming from a variety of coaching environments and clubs. The number of Juniors competing and the number of Junior specific club/squad programs are increasing statewide. To have Junior athletes from six coaches in Queensland is a tribute to the wealth of knowledge and the depth of coaching expertise in the state.Regional athlete Brian McLeod from Rockhampton came out on top of the Mens field and it is encouraging for the sport that regional talent is able to train in their home environments and make the selection for Australian teams.

News  for the 19 DECEMBER 2008

Well done!!!!
Australian Junior Olympic Trials

Friday night saw Sam and Ryan compete for a place on the Junior Olympic Team. Both raced 4 races over the course of the weekend and after the 1st race the 2 of them, believe it or not finished on the exact same time for 7th place.

After race 4 both boys had spent all there energy and proved themselves to be 2 of the best in Australia.

Ryan finished 5th overall.

Sam finished 11th overall after a mishap in the transition zone whilst leading!!!!

What tries to break us makes us stronger!!!!

After all the racing a section panel picked the Australian team to race at the Junior Olympics. Ryan was made a reserve which is an outstanding effort!!!! Pretty funny considering he only has just learnt to ride in the big chain ring!!!!

True story!!!!

Sam’s bad luck didn’t rate a selection but considering he is now the fastest 16year old in Australia at the moment, proves there are big things to come!!!! Keep it up boys!!!

Raby Bay

We had a few good results on this hot and fast course. Lots had a crack at the last race for the season for some mixed results:

Nick Hull: 3rd overall, continuing on from last weeks Bribie victory
Angus Gibson: 4th age group
Nick Free: 3rd age group in enticer

Well done to everyone else who raced ,I can never open the results sheet for these races, so sorry for not going into more detail!!!!

Please be safe and enjoy your Xmas Break, and be mindful of your weight!!!! I had to put that in!!!!

Merry Xmas,

Dan
