2010 Mooloolaba Wave Starts
2010 Australian Junior Sprint Triathlon Championships
The junior mens race was tighter, but it was Ryan Fisher who had the legs in the end, winning in a time of 56min 45secs, almost half a minute clear of Drew Viles. The Queensland pair was among a group of six in a lead pack on the bike that worked hard to ensure the medals were shared between them. Michael Lori, of WA, made an early move on the run and it was Fisher and Viles who responded most positively, before Fisher made his own move at the halfway mark that proved decisive. Ben Shaw, based in Queensland but racing for Ireland, was third just six seconds behind Viles, although his international status meant the bronze medal for the national title went to Jack Hickey of NSW. In a similar scenario to the womens race, Australias representative for this years Youth Olympics, the ACTs Michael Gosman, had to run from well behind in the chase pack to record the second-fastest run split for sixth place. The Sandringham event was the third race in the 2XU Australian Junior Triathlon Championships, with the final race of the series being the Oceania Championships in Wellington, NZ, on March 13. 2XU AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS MALES: 1.Ryan Fisher (Qld) 0:56:452.Drew Viles (Qld) 0:57:123.Ben Shaw (Ireland) 0:57:184.Jack Hickey (NSW)5.Michael Lori (WA) DAT COACHING - Apply NOW!!! Caloundra Triathlon The Caloundra Triathlon is now well positioned to become Australia’s third biggest triathlon behind its Sunshine Coast counterparts Noosa and Mooloolaba Triathlons with the recent announcement by Triathlon Australia High Performance team to include the event as one of the two races in the new National Elite Race Series as part of the athletes domestic season. USM EVENTS Managing Director Garth Prowd heralded the inclusion of this elite race component a huge step towards cementing the Caloundra Triathlon as one of Australia’s preeminent races. “We have had lengthy discussions with the high performance team to secure these two events in Queensland and the Caloundra Tri is now poised to take the number three ranking in terms of national status and attendance with the inclusion of this elite race component.” “The event has received good support from all stakeholders to position the event thus far but will need significant further financial assistance to ensure that it remains at the required top level. This will effectively complete the trio of major triathlons on the Sunshine Coast confirming south east Queensland the home of triathlon in Australia.” USM EVENTS in conjunction with the National Performance Director, Michael Flynn and National Head Coach Shaun Stephens devised the new two race series to provide strong competition for Australia’s junior elite, Under 23 and Elite athletes domestically as part of their training program over some non-traditional formats. The Caloundra Triathlon on Sunday, February 7 will be the first race in the series, athletes will contest an Enduro format, short supersprint distance triathlon completed three times in succession. Race 6 of the Gatorade Queensland Tri Series at Raby Bay on 28 February will host the second race to be held over the Triple Super Sprint format. These races will feature current World Champion Emma Moffatt, Olympic champion Emma Snowsill, National champion Courtney Atkinson and former world number one Brad Kahlefeldt together with our top juniors including silver medallist at 2009 World Championships and the youngest ever Noosa Triathlon winner Emma Jackson. “This will probably be the best field of triathletes in Australia for 2010 outside the World Cup at Mooloolaba. The new short distance, close circuit format will also guarantee intense and exciting racing with the Caloundra course perfectly suited to this type of event,” said Prowd.
Last years’ event attracted 1,700 competitors, the
largest in the series history with 2010 figures expected to exceed
2000. NEWS Following a review and consultation with numerous industry bodies, Triathlon Australia has dissolved the existing Challenge Series format in favour of established races. The new Board, elected at last month’s Annual General Meeting, is determined to adopt a unified and cooperative approach for the betterment of the sport and to that end we sought immediate input from our state associations, previous participants and the TA high performance unit to assist in an external review conducted by experienced event director, Garth Prowd. It was clear from the review that the Challenge Series had failed to meet the previous Board’s expectations and deliver on its original objectives. The series, in its existing format, was not financially viable at this stage and faced significant logistical hurdles, so the Board decided to withdraw from the series now in order to protect the interests of its members and the sport. This decision has led to four races in the 2010 calendar being cancelled. The cancelled races are Geelong on January 17, Hobart on February 14, Sydney on March 7 and Adelaide on March 20-21. Arrangements are already being made to advise those who have entered these races of the changes and to refund their entry fees. Races in Canberra (January 24) will still go ahead on this date, though it will now be known as the Canberra Capital Triathlon and run by Triathlon ACT. Those who entered Canberra Challenge races will receive a full refund and will need to re-enter races in the Canberra Capital Triathlon. Please visit www.triathlonact.com.au for details and entry. For those athletes wanting to qualify for the Australian age group team at the 2010 World Championships in Budapest, alternate selection races have already been identified. All other races previously nominated as selection races will continue as selection races, while Challenge Series qualifying races have been replaced by a number of established and locally run races in other states. Click here for a full list of selection races for both Sprint and Olympic Distance qualification. The Australian championship races, which were to be held as part of the races in Adelaide have been reallocated, with the Age Group Olympic Distance Championships to be held as part of the Canberra Capital Triathlon on January 24. An announcement will be made shortly to confirm the locations of the Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Championships and Australian Age Group Duathlon Championships that were to also be held as part of the Adelaide Challenge. Races in the 2XU Australian Junior Triathlon Series remain unchanged in Canberra and Wellington, while Hobart has been cancelled and an alternate race will be advised. The open elite series is now under review. The race in Queensland’s Raby Bay (February 28) is confirmed; however, the Hobart (February 14) and Sydney (March 7) races have been cancelled. These changes have not been made lightly and having now relieved itself of the Challenge Series, Triathlon Australia is free to implement pro-active initiatives that will lift the profile of the sport and its athletes, facilitate delivery of a unified race calendar, and improve services to our members. We regret that these changes will disrupt those athletes who have already entered the cancelled events. TA will reimburse entry fees in full and endeavour to assist these athletes to enter an alternate qualifying race should they have difficulty submitting entries at this late stage. The Board is confident this initiative is in the long term interests of the sport. We plan to work closely with our state associations, experienced race directors, our athletes and members to develop a collaborative approach and clear direction for a high profile national series in 2011 and beyond.

If you weren’t there, I have been appointed the AIS scholarship coach. This is a 2 year contract which is a fulltime position. What this means is that I won’t be coaching for DAT in a fulltime capacity. I have appointed a coach by the name of ????, he will start on the 1st week of January. In the interim I will around again form next Wednesday till the end of year. The club will remain the same with the same training framework. I see us still forging ahead, but just with a few changes. Junior Emerging Talent Squad: It’s really going to hurt the other 4 athletes. Nick Hull, Bonnie Atherton, Sam Volkers and Angus Gibson to read this, but as stated this is the hardest team in Australia to make and should only make these guys train harder. They will all come out of the selection process tougher athletes. Our club had the best and strongest representation of any club in Queensland. Something to be proud of. I was extremely proud of each and every one of you. It hurts so much to not see all of you make the squad. But as they say, that’s sport.
Straddie Off Road Classic:
Queensland Aquathon Championships:
Half Ironman Coomera: Jets/Metros Trials This Saturday: For those that supported the Junior Athletes for their 1st time trial day the 2nd one is next Saturday, and after the Worlds wash up I believe it will be a harder slog this time. If you can make it to any of the time trials it really makes a difference to the guys slogging it out. They start at 6am at Nundah track for the ride..

Riding in a pack: Feathering the brakes means to slightly apply force to the lever without grabbing a big hand full. This means when in a pack situation, you can slow down ever so slightly without the sudden stopping that occurs when you grab the brake really hard. This hopefully will eliminate any accident and keep the pack rolling at a consistent pace.
Magpies:
Good Luck Johnny!!!!
Going by his current form, he will lead the 1st 100m of the run!!!! Run Johnny Run!!!! Should have some good stories from this trip!!!
